CHIVA CHAITYA
Chiva are votive monuments, which are usually about 6 feet high and usually of stone (although also
found of clay or terracotta and also of different sizes), you will find in street corners,
courtyards,
hilltops, private lands, public places. Thousands of families have built thousands of them in
centuries.
And, because beautifully crafted with various Buddhist iconography, in addition for them to having
social, archaelogical values they have economical values due to it's aesthetic values to the
Kathmandu
valley, making the valley as an open museum. Going around the city and finding them is comparable to
bird watching or study of dinosaurs, because of variety and design in different periods.
What we present here
A) Marker in Map
Because of the numereous count of Chivas in the valley having their location data among other data is
very important to be maintained as an inventory. We have tried
to locate all individual Chiva and locate them and present them here in the page.
You can click on individual Chiva to view their photo and details.(note: details are being populated
and
is a contineous process).
B) 3D Models of Chiva
In addition to marking each and every Chiva marked in the map, we are building the 3D model - 3D view
of
each type of Chiva. Whereever you see 'Click for 3D' on a marker, you will be able to click and view
3D
model of that Chiva
With this presentation we hope to contribute to the protection and promotion of these
under-represented
but important heritage of the country.
